The world is miraculous and it's my mission to paint it. My paintings are diverse both in the subject and technique. By painting I explore and explain the world.
While the subjects I paint can be placed into several categories, they all share a common theme. I paint landscapes, mountains, seascapes, the figure, still life and nonobjective creations of my imagination. Common to all my subjects is the theme of interdependence. The shapes in a landscape or figure study are in conversation with each other. The highlight on a hip deepens the shadow on the torso or the vertical nature of a Douglas fir is defined by it's contour against a cobalt sky. The world is full of these dynamic equilibriums. I'm describing visual relationships but I'm doing it with the awareness of their existence on a chemical, hormonal, atomic, and spiritual level. In this way, my subjects tend to be an entry point into a description of the environment.
My methods include wet-on-wet watercolors, watercolors on dry paper, and undiluted acrylics painted onto canvas or panel. Watercolors give me freedom to roam the hills and forest in search of subjects. As a medium they can describe the natural colors better than anything and they're delightfully portable. I choose to paint with acrylics when I want to explore an idea that's not clearly definable in my mind. They're opaque yet quick drying so I can try things and feel my way closer and closer to the goal until the painting evokes an emotional reaction in me.
BiographyI was Born in Peekskill, NY. I spent my first 18 years in this beautiful area of the Hudson Highlands, hiking the hills and forests; learning their forms and colors. Thus was born my love of the natural world. It gives me peace. From an early age I tried to recreate some of that feeling through art. I studied commercial art at Dutchess Community College in Poughkeepsie, NY. After graduating in 1994, I went west to Colorado. The majestic beauty of the Rocky Mountains was a revelation to me. I find endless inspiration for art and life here. Since initially moving west, I've traveled the mountain states extensively. The Olympic Peninsula in Washington State was home for a while. There I learned to love the ocean as well as the mountains. I now call Boulder, CO home again. I have shown my art in several juried arts shows and solo exhibitions. I also have won awards for my maritime, floral, and landscape paintings. When not painting, I spend my time hiking, mountain biking, snowboarding, rock climbing and working as a graphic designer. |
