This is about a feeling of great upheaval. Nothing is straight or recognizable. Moving makes me feel like this. |

This painting is fiction. It's a painter who has to sacrifice his friendships to pursue his art. He kills his distractions because only art matters. |

We're built of millions and billions of cells. Pointalists build a scene from dots. CR tubes construct images from pixels. I was attempting to build with my own unit. They're part muscle, part light and shadow. The facial expression is what comes through though. We must be hard wired to see that in anything resembling a face. |

I'm doodling around here. I might be feeling a little moldy. Live in Washington long enough and the mold starts growing on you. Like that guy in Creep Show. |

Letting go of the tight and controlled style of painting takes an effort for me. When I do though, the results can be surprising. This painting gets better the longer I live with it.
Selected for the 2004 Small Expressions juried art show.

Realistically depicted abstract forms interest me. I'm using it here to give a shape to a feeling. This isn't symbolism; I think of it as surrealism. I don't want to paint from the sub-conscience, however. Emotions are more interesting. We know what our emotions are but when we don't like them we invent a place to ignore them. That's what the sub-conscience is. |

Segmented and faceted water is a fun idea to play with. The intense colors really glow in this one. |

Of course I'm aware of the other use of this name. I don't care, it describes my painting best. This experimentation with color and shapes had a surprising result. It takes me in. |

I painted this as a delayed reaction to my desert trip from this fall. The arch is a fairly accurate rendering of Delicate Arch in Arches National Park. I put it in front of an abstract pattern of colored shapes, I don't know why, the painting just told me to do it. |
